Tuition & Instruction - Frequently Asked Questions

If we could encourage you to do only one thing, that would be to call us, and talk about fly fishing, how to progress, improve or just get started.......contact us

Q: Why should I learn from a qualified instructor?
A: Having obtained recognised qualifications as instructors, we have shown proven skills to be able to teach you how to fly cast correctly. We are committed to sharing these skills, our experience and knowledge with you, helping you avoid the many common casting faults and the frustrations experienced by so many fly fishers.

A: We would discourage you in seeking fly casting tuition from an unqualified instructor
He or she may not......
..... have proven or tested skills to teach you to cast correctly,
..... have been cleared by the Criminal Records Bureau,
..... have adequate Public Liability Insurance to safe guard and protect you.
Don't be afraid to ask the instructor to prove he or she is qualified......have peace of mind.

Q: Why use the Wiltshire & Devon Fly Fishing Schools?
A: To safe guard you we are full time, qualified, REFFIS registered and GAIA licensed casting instructors. We have full public liability insurance, are first aid trained, and are Criminal Records Bureau certified.

Q: I am looking to obtain tuition for someone else as a gift?
A: We provide Gift Vouchers which can be purchased to celebrate any special occasion and used for any of our tuition options...email here

Q: I have never fly fished before?
A: As instructors we're used to teaching beginners and are sympathetic to the needs of each individual. We'll tailor the instruction to suit you and ensure you have a memorable introduction to this wonderful sport.

Q: I have done some fly fishing but want to improve?
A: We can take your fly fishing beyond the basic overhead and roll cast. We can teach you to apply the Single or Double haul, Spey cast with single handed rods, Snake Roll, Snap-T and many more, as well as share with you a variety of fly fishing techniques useful on both rivers and lakes.

Q: How long is the tuition you provide?
A: Our instructors offer tuition from a minimum of 4 hours (Part Day). We believe this is the least amount of time that would benefit you as a potential fly angler.
A: We can also tailor 1, 2, 3 & 4 day courses on a combination of lakes, rivers and reservoirs to suit both your budget and your individual needs.

Q: Where will the tuition be held?
A: We have access to a number of chalkstreams, rivers and lakes in both Wiltshire and Devon (See our venues page for just a few of these venues). Alternative locations can be sought by arrangement.

Q: I don't have any tackle or equipment?
A: Do not worry! - All of your equipment and tackle is provided by us FREE...more

A: We would encourage you not to make any purchase of tackle prior to your instruction. Don't spend your money on something that may not be suited to you. We use only top quality tackle and this will give you the opportunity to try a variety of different types of rod & line etc... With the knowledge you'll be given regarding the right type of tackle and equipment you'll then feel a bit more confident about future purchases.

Q: When is the best time to learn?
A: You can learn to cast and fish all year round. A lot of stillwater lakes remain open for the whole year, allowing you to fish for Rainbow trout. River systems that carry the winter Grayling will also allow fishing through the winter once the Brown trout season has closed.
We have access to chalkstreams, rivers and stillwaters that give us these options throughout the year.

Q: What will I learn?
A: Having understood how the rod, reel and fly line work, you'll then learn how to cast correctly (A number of different styles and techniques will be covered based on your ability and experience as either a beginner or improver ). Watercraft, entomology and all other fly fishing paraphernalia will be covered relative to your tailored individual course.

Q: What happens after my lesson has finished?
A: You will go away with a full understanding of what is required to further improve your fly fishing skills and casting technique. We'll provide tuition and practice notes to use as a reference whilst you continue learning.

Q: How many more lessons will I need?
A: Having discussed and assessed your abilities during the course of your tuition, we will inform and guide you as to what further lessons we believe you may require going forward.

Q: What are the costs involved?
A: Click here for details

Q: What now?
A: Contact us, we'll be more than happy to guide you on a package that best suits your individual needs.
